Rams skipper Savage subdued after super strike

ROBBIE Savage was in no mood to dine out on his wonder strike after Derby County conceded a last-gasp equaliser against Sheffield United.

Savage's 25-yard screamer – his second goal of the season – gave the Rams a 17th-minute lead at Bramall Lane and it looked to have given them victory until Lee Williamson levelled in stoppage time.

"It was a great strike but it means nothing really now because we ended up drawing the game," said the Derby skipper.

"It isn't about Robbie Savage, it is about Derby County and I'm just disappointed that we didn't win the match."

Savage rued Derby's failure to build on their lead in an impressive first-half display but believes the Rams can take heart from their performance going into tomorrow night's home match against Championship leaders Newcastle United.

"I thought we deserved to win the game on our first-half performance," he said. "We were magnificent in the first half and should have easily been two or three goals up by half-time. The fact that we weren't has cost us.

"That is the most I have seen us control a game and, in fact, I think we played better than we did against Forest.

"It does feel like a loss, to be honest, but make no mistake, we can take a lot of positives from this because it was a magnificent away performance.

"If we can get on the front foot against Newcastle like we have done in the past couple of weeks, we will have a hell of a chance against them."
